NIMC Act 2026 Empowers Commission to Crack Down on Identity Fraud and Roll Out Ward Enrolment
The National Identity Management Commission says the new NIMC Act 2026 has bolstered Nigeria’s digital identity framework. It enhances data security and gives the commission authority to arrest and prosecute identity thieves. Speaking during a visit to the Ministry of Information and the National Orientation Agency, the director-general explained that the revamped law fills gaps left by the previous act and aligns with the 2023 Data Protection Act. NIMC has strengthened its internal enforcement team through the new Inspectorate, Compliance and Enforcement (ICE) Unit. In line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, NIMC has launched a ward enrolment programme to register Nigerians in all 8,009 wards. The initiative leverages partnerships with NOA to reach grassroots communities and ensure inclusive coverage. The Minister of Information commended the legislation and urged sustained public sensitisation through inter-agency collaboration. He pledged support from federal communication platforms to maximise awareness of the new provisions.
