Lagos Makes Health Insurance Mandatory as Sanwo-Olu Signs Executive Order
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has signed an executive order making health-insurance enrolment compulsory for residents. The governor announced the move in Lagos on Wednesday, saying it is intended to make quality healthcare more affordable and reduce the burden of paying full medical bills at the point of treatment. The state has set up a Private Health Plan Implementation Steering Committee and an Enforcement Task Force to oversee compliance. However, details of enforcement procedures and timelines have not yet been disclosed. Sanwo-Olu said the policy would support residents and healthcare providers by expanding insurance coverage and creating a more sustainable funding system for hospitals.
