My Concerns About How Feminism Is Discussed by Some Young Nigerian Women
I grew up in Nigeria in the 1980s and 1990s, when relationships and marriages seemed less publicly confrontational. Today, I see more bitterness, distrust and drama in conversations between men and women, especially online. To me, feminism means advocating equal social, economic and political opportunities for women, as well as protection from violence and abuse. These are important causes that deserve serious support. However, I believe some online voices wrongly present feminism as hostility towards men or as a reason to ridicule men who cannot meet financial expectations. I do not think feminism should encourage hatred, disrespect or unhealthy dependence in relationships. Nigeria remains a largely patriarchal society, and I believe meaningful progress will require honest dialogue, shared responsibility and respect between both genders.
