Security First: Why Nigeria Must Hold Government Accountable for Kidnappings

Security of lives and property is the first duty of any government. Development claims mean little when citizens cannot travel, work, or sleep safely. Nigeria’s Constitution makes the security and welfare of the people the primary purpose of government. I was relieved by reports that abducted residents of Woro in Kaiama LGA, Kwara State, and victims in Niger State were released. But relief should not replace accountability. Families reportedly spent months in fear, while lives and livelihoods were lost to kidnappings and violent attacks. The problem now reaches ordinary citizens, judges, local officials, and senior military officers. When armed groups repeatedly abduct and kill people with little deterrence, the state’s duty to protect its citizens is clearly in question. President Tinubu must treat security as the urgent priority. Nigerians should demand accountability and use the 2027 polls to judge whether this government has protected their lives, liberty, and property. Security first; every other promise must follow.
