Why Melchizedek Was Not Greater Than Jesus Christ
Melchizedek was a genuine king and priest of the Most High God, but his offices pointed forward to their complete fulfilment in Jesus Christ. His titles as king of righteousness and king of peace do not place him above Christ, who is eternally King of kings and Lord of lords. Hebrews describes Melchizedek as being without recorded father, mother, genealogy, beginning or end. This does not make him supreme over Jesus. Christ’s human birth and genealogy belong to His incarnation, not to the beginning of His divine existence. Jesus existed before creation and came in the flesh as God revealed among humanity. Melchizedek blessed Abram and received tithes, showing the greatness of his priestly office. Yet that office was provisional and symbolic. Jesus possesses the eternal reality to which Melchizedek’s priesthood, kingship and blessings pointed. Scripture presents Jesus as the full expression of God, with the fullness of the Godhead dwelling in Him bodily. Melchizedek was a representative and a foreshadowing, but Jesus Christ remains greater than every priest, king and earthly representation.
