Can a Believer Return to Sin and Still Be Saved? A Reflection on 2 Peter 2:20
Some people believe that once a person is saved, they are eternally secure regardless of how they live. Others argue that anyone who later leaves the faith was never truly saved. I do not believe this is what the apostles taught. In 2 Peter 2:20, Peter speaks about people who escaped the corruption of the world through the knowledge of Jesus Christ but later became entangled in it again. To me, this refers to people who knew Christ, received forgiveness and turned away from their former life, yet later returned to persistent sin. I am not saying a person who sins cannot be forgiven. Anyone who acknowledges their wrong and genuinely repents can receive mercy and cleansing. However, deliberately continuing in sin while assuming that belief alone gives licence to live without repentance is dangerous. Peter warns that the end of such a person may be worse than their beginning if they refuse to repent. This also calls to mind Christ's warning to those who claim to know Him but continue as workers of iniquity. The message is clear: faith in Christ must be followed by a life of repentance and obedience.
