Court Awards N100m to Family of Man Tortured to Death by Police in Calabar
A federal high court in Calabar has ordered the Nigeria Police Force and other respondents to pay N100 million in damages. The suit was filed by the mother of the victim over the alleged torture and killing of 22-year-old Onyekachi Mba by police officers at the Cross River State Government House on August 1, 2025. Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu held that the assault and shooting were unlawful and violated Mba’s rights to personal liberty, dignity and freedom of movement under the constitution. The judgment condemned the officers’ actions as an abuse of power and executive recklessness. It allows the award to be paid jointly or severally by the respondents.
