NiHSA Warns of River Flooding Risk in 15 States, Urges Early Evacuation

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency has warned that riverine flooding may affect parts of 15 states between September 19 and 25. The states are Imo, Cross River, Ebonyi, Benue, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, Rivers, Edo, Kogi, Taraba, Delta, Bayelsa, Enugu and Abia. The agency said rising water levels in rivers and streams could put communities, schools, health centres, markets, farmland and other facilities at risk. It identified nine river-monitoring stations for close attention, including Obubra, Itigidi and Epento along the Cross River. Residents in vulnerable areas are urged to move people, livestock and valuables to safer ground where necessary. Authorities should prepare shelters, relief materials, safe water and first-aid supplies, while communities should keep drains clear, follow official alerts and avoid crossing flooded roads or fast-flowing water.
