Should Nigeria Regulate Chinese Retailers or Help Local Traders Compete?
I believe Nigerian business leaders should focus less on asking the government to restrict Chinese traders and more on building the capacity to compete. A strong economy sets fair labour rules, collects taxes and creates conditions that allow businesses to grow. In my experience as a trader in Ile-Ife, growth depended on sales outlets, reliable staff, record-keeping, supplier relationships and assets. Access to multiple sales points and sound management can be more important than taking unsecured loans. Traders and manufacturers need collateral, real estate and investor support to meet suppliers’ minimum order requirements. Chinese operators in Nigeria also have to meet these requirements, so local businesses should strengthen their own systems and competitiveness.
