Rescued Plateau Women Reveal Horror of Cross-Border Trafficking to Mali as GAHTO Warns of Exploitation in Egypt
Three women from Plateau State say they were lured by fake job offers in Lagos and trafficked through Cotonou into Mali for forced prostitution. They were rescued and returned home thanks to the Global Anti Human Trafficking Organization. Becky Ibrahim, Blessing Nanging and Miracle Yakubu described brutal beatings, intimidation and a stabbing when they attempted to escape. They urge young Nigerians to beware of suspicious overseas job promises and to avoid travelling with strangers. GAHTO’s president also raised alarm over cases in Egypt where traffickers seize passports and force victims into unpaid labour for up to two years. Human rights advocates are calling for stronger anti-trafficking laws, better support for NAPTIP and community action to protect vulnerable women.
