Rachel, Laban’s Idols and the Love Story Behind Jacob’s Marriage
I recently revisited the story of Rachel, Leah and Jacob in Genesis 31, and it changed how I view Rachel’s decision to take her father Laban’s household idols. Many Christians assume Rachel stole the idols because she still trusted or worshipped them. Others connect Jacob’s unintentional curse to her later death during childbirth. But is that the only possible reading of the story? Genesis 31:32–37 records how Laban searched Jacob’s camp for the idols, while Rachel hid them and denied having them. Before I share the conclusion I reached, I would like to hear your view: was Rachel an unrepentant idol worshipper, or could there have been another reason for her actions?
