Understanding Primary Protectors and God Grid Members in Yoruba Spiritual Belief
Primary protectors are described as senior spirits in male incarnation who receive offerings from other spirits and remit them to the God grid. In this belief, each person has two primary protectors, known in Yoruba theology as Olori Egbe. They are believed to support a person’s advancement and spiritual protection. God grid members are described as spirits in female incarnation who serve a 300-year term and participate in decisions with God. They are presented as being linked to the Yoruba concept of Iyami Eleye, while remaining distinct from God because God cannot incarnate on Earth. The belief also holds that incarnated primary protectors and God grid members are assigned large numbers of Oyeku Ose guardian spirits. Ordinary people may also receive such spiritual protection when they attain major responsibilities or high social positions. In this view, God’s help is based on what a person deserves rather than religious rituals or devotion.
