Pig Kidney Keeps US Patient Off Dialysis for Record 271 Days

A genetically edited pig kidney kept a 66-year-old US patient with end-stage kidney disease off dialysis for 271 days, doctors have reported. It is the longest recorded period a pig kidney has functioned in a living human. The transplant was intended as a temporary bridge while he waited for a human donor organ. After briefly returning to dialysis, he successfully received a human kidney transplant. Researchers say the result could help tackle the global shortage of donor kidneys. They hope pig-to-human transplants may one day reduce long waits for patients with kidney failure, although more studies are needed to confirm long-term safety and effectiveness.
