Should Nigeria Restrict Foreign Manufacturers From Retail Trading?

I believe Nigeria should review its trade rules on foreign manufacturers and retailers, especially where foreign-owned businesses sell directly to consumers. My concern is that unrestricted direct retail can reduce opportunities for Nigerian distributors, wholesalers and small retailers. A supply chain can include manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers and consumers. However, manufacturers can also sell directly to consumers in many modern markets. The real issue is whether competition is fair and whether local businesses can access finance, imports and market opportunities on equal terms. Nigeria should enforce tax, immigration, customs and business-registration laws against every trader, local or foreign. Any policy on foreign participation in retail should be evidence-based, apply fairly, and protect Nigerian jobs without encouraging hostility toward any nationality. The government should investigate claims of tax evasion, unfair financing advantages and foreign-currency payment practices, then strengthen compliance where necessary.
