Nigeria Does Not Have Dead Courses, Only Outdated Curricula
Calls to scrap courses such as History, Philosophy, Languages, Sociology and Religious Studies in favour of ICT, AI and Data Science miss the real problem: outdated curricula. No field of knowledge is useless when it is taught to address present-day needs. Nigeria needs graduates with digital skills, but technology works best when it is paired with human understanding. Historians, sociologists, linguists and philosophers can help shape better institutions, build trusted fintech products, strengthen cultural diplomacy and develop local-language technology. Universities should reform courses to tackle Nigerian and African challenges. History should examine institutions and diversity, Languages should support translation technology and the creative economy, while Theatre Arts should strengthen Nollywood and cultural soft power. The priority should be curriculum reform, practical problem-solving and interdisciplinary learning, not the removal of humanities and social science courses.
