Freed NYSC Prospective Corps Members Offered South-West Posting Amid Safety Concerns
Twenty prospective corps members abducted on the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Imo State have regained their freedom after days in captivity. Police said security operatives rescued them, but some families maintained that ransom was paid. The graduates were travelling to Abia and Akwa Ibom for NYSC service when they were seized. Some survivors and relatives have reportedly required medical care following the ordeal. NYSC has been approached for confirmation of reports that the affected graduates may be redeployed to the South-West. The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of young Nigerians travelling long distances for national service. It has also revived calls for stronger travel protection, risk-sensitive deployment and a review of the NYSC scheme amid recurring kidnappings of corps members.
