UEFA Loses Confidence in Infantino After FIFA Withdraws World Cup Investment Plan

UEFA Loses Confidence in Infantino After FIFA Withdraws World Cup Investment Plan

UEFA says it has lost confidence in FIFA president Gianni Infantino after he proposed a private-equity deal involving the World Cup. The proposal would have created a $20 billion company to manage the tournament with private investors. The plan was withdrawn after strong opposition from UEFA, CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation. UEFA criticised what it called secretive decision-making and said those responsible must be held accountable. Carlos Cordeiro, a senior adviser to Infantino, resigned during the dispute, while FIFA staff also raised concerns over the lack of transparency.
