Military Police Officer Tells Court Coup Suspects Confessed Voluntarily

A military police officer testified in the Federal High Court in Abuja that six suspects accused of plotting to overthrow President Tinubu made their confessional statements freely. He said the defendants remained calm, were informed of their constitutional rights, and never denied access to legal counsel before signing written statements. The witness explained that video recordings of the interrogations showed no coercion or inducement. He confirmed compliance with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, and standard procedures. Statements and storage devices were admitted as exhibits after defence lawyers raised no objections. Under cross-examination, the officer acknowledged he was not part of the special investigative panel and that no lawyers or civil society representatives endorsed the statements. He added that suspects were reminded of their right to silence and legal representation but did not request counsel. Justice Abdulmalik adjourned for continuation on May 13.
