FG Outlines Education Reforms: Teacher Training, Student Loans and Out-of-School Children in Focus
The Federal Government says it is reviewing the national curriculum to reduce subject overload and place more emphasis on practical understanding. It is also revising pre-service teacher training and developing a Comprehensive Teacher Policy covering recruitment, welfare, deployment and career progression. The government said only about 10 per cent of teachers benefited from the ₦20 billion allocated to state teacher training in 2025. A zero-rated digital training platform has now reached more than 60,000 teachers. Schools are also expected to be graded from A to D based on infrastructure, teacher qualifications and learning outcomes. At the tertiary level, the government said it has invested more than ₦400 billion to expand programmes in medicine, pharmacy, science and engineering. NELFUND has reportedly supported over 1.6 million students in 322 institutions, while technical and vocational training has recorded more than 100,000 beneficiaries. The reforms also target Nigeria’s estimated 10 million to over 20 million out-of-school children through better data collection, enrolment programmes and bilingual schools that combine religious and conventional education. The key question is whether these plans will translate into better-equipped schools, properly supported teachers and measurable improvements in learning.
