Atiku Rejected 2003 Presidential Push to Support Obasanjo, Aide Says
Atiku Abubakar’s media aide, Paul Ibe, says the former vice president rejected efforts by some Peoples Democratic Party governors to position him for the presidency in 2003, choosing instead to support then-President Olusegun Obasanjo’s re-election. Ibe cited former Abia State governor Orji Kalu as saying that Atiku had the backing of about 17 governors but refused to act against Obasanjo because he did not want to betray him. The aide said the account challenges claims that Atiku was disloyal to Obasanjo. He also dismissed allegations that Atiku encouraged moves to impeach Obasanjo and maintained that the PTDF investigation was politically motivated by Atiku’s opposition to the former president’s third-term bid.
