From the Sodje Brothers to Femi Azeez: Nigerian Stars Honoured in PFA Teams of the Year
Millwall forward Femi Azeez has joined a select group of Nigerian footballers recognised in the Professional Footballers’ Association Teams of the Year. His place in the 2025–26 Championship XI followed a standout season in which he recorded 11 goals and eight assists. Efe Sodje was among the early Nigerian recipients, making the old Division Three Team of the Year in 2003–04 after helping Huddersfield Town secure promotion. His younger brother, Sam, followed with a League One selection for Brentford in 2005–06. Danny Shittu earned Championship recognition with Watford in 2007–08 after an impressive campaign that included nine goals in all competitions. Azeez now continues that tradition, with his award reflecting the respect of fellow professionals across English football.
