Al-Taawoun Handed Stadium Ban and Fine Over Chants Aimed at Ruben Neves
Saudi Pro League club Al-Taawoun have received a two-match stadium ban and a fine of 100,000 Saudi riyals after some supporters taunted Al-Hilal midfielder Ruben Neves with chants referencing his late friend, Diogo Jota. The chants were heard during Al-Taawoun’s 6-0 defeat to Al-Hilal. Neves played alongside Jota at Wolverhampton Wanderers and for Portugal, and was a pallbearer at his funeral following Jota’s death in a car crash in Spain in July 2025. Neves condemned the behaviour after the match, while Cristiano Ronaldo called for lifetime bans for fans who use personal tragedies to abuse players. Al-Hilal, Al-Taawoun, the Saudi Pro League and the Saudi Arabian Football Federation also condemned the incident.
