Why I Am Wary of the Rush for Dangote Refinery Shares
If you bought Dangote Cement shares during the early rush, how did it turn out for you? I remember similar excitement at the time. Big investors often enter early, ride the momentum and exit, leaving smaller investors exposed. I am not predicting doom, but we have seen this pattern before. Between 2005 and 2008, banks heavily promoted IPOs, and many investors later suffered serious losses. I once had nearly ₦12 million invested with FSDH. I withdrew part of it for real estate, but the balance fell from more than ₦5 million in 2010 to less than ₦200,000. My view is simple: investors should be cautious about hype and consider time-tested stocks such as Nestlé. The current excitement may fade within a few years.
