Evil Spirits in the Old and New Testament: From Judgment to Deliverance

In the Old Testament, 1 Samuel 16:14 and 18:10 describe an evil spirit sent by God to torment King Saul as a form of judgment and discipline. The New Testament shifts focus. Jesus heals and casts out evil spirits (Matthew 8:16, Luke 4:33-36). He shows God’s power to free people from spiritual oppression. This contrast raises a question: the same God who once allowed evil spirits now offers deliverance. It even seems Jesus may have forgotten that he once sent out those spirits to torment people.
