Ahead of 2026 World Cup, New York Honors Thierry Henry and Pelé with Street Renamings

Ahead of 2026 World Cup, New York Honors Thierry Henry and Pelé with Street Renamings

New York City has temporarily renamed two streets to celebrate football icons Thierry Henry and Pelé ahead of the 2026 World Cup kick-off. Officials unveiled “Thierry Henry Way” at West 50th Street and 6th Avenue in Manhattan. Henry joined the ceremony via video call and looked back on his time with Arsenal, Barcelona and the New York Red Bulls. In Queens, the intersection of Shea Road and Meridian Road has been christened “Pelé Place.” Both honorary names will remain in place until November 1, as fans count down to the tournament.

It's notable those tributes come only weeks before the World Cup, turning public spaces into temporary photo ops rather than lasting homages.

Renaming streets barely changes daily life; real impact comes from building affordable pitches or funding youth programs instead.

Pair the street dedications with city-sponsored football clinics or public viewing parties to spark genuine community engagement around the 2026 World Cup.
