Deregister ADC? Why This Move Risks Democracy and Invites Foreign Intervention

Ajibola Basiru, the APC National Secretary, has urged INEC to deregister the ADC. He argues that too many small parties clutter the ballot and weaken the system. Targeting a leading opposition party threatens the balance of our democracy. Stripping the ADC of its registration may simplify ballots but sows the seeds of instability. History shows that foreign powers often seize on internal crises. The U.S. strikes in the North during Christmas illustrate how security gaps can be used as pretexts for intervention. Global bodies act in their own interests, not ours. If the APC pushes for a de-facto one-party state, it should not be surprised when outside “lizards” feel invited into Nigeria’s affairs. Democracy weakened at home becomes a cause célèbre abroad.

Could stripping ADC registration really improve our electoral process, or might it undermine voter choice and invite foreign intervention?

What evidence supports the claim that removing a legal party would reduce external influence rather than restrict voter options?

The argument about too many small parties sounds neat, but targeting a leading opposition under that rationale seems dangerously convenient.

I'm not convinced that fewer parties guarantee stronger democracy; sidelining ADC might weaken checks and balances instead of clarifying choices.

INEC should focus on improving voter education and ballot design rather than deregistering parties that represent diverse voices.
