Israel Claims Slain Al Jazeera Reporter Led Hamas Arms Unit
The Israeli military says an Al Jazeera journalist killed in a Gaza strike was also a Hamas militant using his press credentials as cover. They identified Mohammed Wishah as a key figure in rocket and weapons production and accused him of planning attacks against Israeli forces. Al Jazeera strongly condemned the strike that killed Wishah in western Gaza. Media rights groups, including Reporters Without Borders, have denounced the allegation and noted that over 220 journalists have died in the conflict since late 2021. The broadcaster vows to pursue legal action to hold those responsible to account. The incident comes amid a delicate ceasefire that has frequently been breached. Recent hostilities have also spread to southern Lebanon, where limited operations targeted Hezbollah following cross-border attacks. Al Jazeera reports that eleven of its journalists have been killed since October 2023.
