Five Drown in Ohio’s Scioto River After Parents’ Rescue Attempts
On the night of July 19, a group of five adults, two children and another individual went fishing on the Scioto River near Powell, Ohio. When one swimmer began to struggle in the fast-moving current, two others dove in to help before another pair joined the rescue—all five were swept away. Authorities were alerted around 9 p.m. when a young child, visibly distraught, ran to a nearby road and called 911. Two women were pulled from the river and later pronounced dead at hospital. The bodies of three men were recovered the next day. Among those lost were two sets of parents, leaving several children orphaned; two young children have been placed in family services. Officials say the river flow was more than double its normal rate that night, and they urge anyone entering open water to wear proper safety gear and only swim in conditions that match their abilities.
