Lagos Warns Residents Over Suspected Adulterated Palm Oil in Markets
The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency has warned residents to be cautious when buying palm oil following concerns that some products in markets may be adulterated. Food safety experts said dishonest sellers may use unapproved Sudan or Azo dyes to create an unusually deep-red colour. They also warned that fresh palm oil could be mixed with recycled cooking oil and other unsafe substances. Consumers have been advised to buy from trusted sellers and report suspicious products or traders to the appropriate authorities. Although genuine palm oil may separate naturally into orange or red-yellow layers after standing, experts stressed that appearance alone cannot confirm whether oil is safe.
