Shettima Urges New ECOWAS Leaders to Strengthen Regional Unity and Integration

Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged the new leadership of the ECOWAS Commission to make regional unity, integration and economic development central to its work. Speaking during a meeting with ECOWAS Commission President Birame Diop on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Shettima called for stronger cooperation among West African countries. He also urged ECOWAS to engage emerging regional blocs, including the Alliance of Sahel States. The Vice President asked the commission to encourage private-sector participation in the Lagos-Abidjan highway project and promised Nigeria’s continued support for ECOWAS. Diop praised Nigeria’s role in the bloc and called for greater cooperation to address insecurity and slow development across the region.
