NUC Blacklists 58 Illegal Online Universities Operating in Nigeria

The National Universities Commission (NUC) maintains a master list of unaccredited institutions operating online, via satellite campuses or as degree mills. In its latest update, the NUC flags over 58 illegal universities banned from operating in Nigeria. Some named institutions include Richmond Open University (Abia), Atlantic Intercontinental University (Anambra) and Pacific Western University (Owerri study centre). Prospective students are urged to verify accreditation before applying or paying fees. For legitimate flexible learning, the NUC authorizes Open and Distance Learning centres at federal universities such as the National Open University of Nigeria, University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, Ahmadu Bello University, Obafemi Awolowo University and University of Abuja.

Did anyone verify how the NUC determines these 58 online institutions as illegal, and what steps follow to protect students?

How exactly does NUC assess these online schools before blacklisting them? Any published criteria or evidence available?

The NUC's master list is helpful, but I wonder if these unaccredited bodies still enroll students under the radar.

Banning them might drive these degree mills further underground instead of fixing the accreditation process itself first.

Students should always cross-check any university's accreditation on the NUC website before applying to avoid wasted time and resources.
