Funeral Director Admits Stashing 30 Bodies and Handing Families Strangers’ Ashes
A UK funeral director has confessed to storing the bodies of at least 30 people in fridges and deceiving grieving relatives. Families paid for cremations but were given urns containing ashes that did not belong to their loved ones. Police uncovered the scheme at Legacy Funeral Directors in Hull during a raid in March 2024. Officers found dozens of unreleased bodies, including one 94-year-old remained uncremated for nearly a year. Investigators say victims’ families paid around £1,600 per service and also donated to charities that never received funds. Relatives described the revelations as deeply traumatic. One mourner said placing her stepfather’s coffin in the urn had been her final connection to her late mother. Authorities warned that DNA tests may never identify the ashes, and called for stricter oversight of the funeral industry. Sentencing for the director is pending.
