How to Respond When People Close to You Discourage Your Purpose
David faced discouragement from his own brother before he ever confronted Goliath. In 1 Samuel 17:28–30, Eliab questioned David’s motives, mocked his responsibilities and tried to make him feel small. David refused to be distracted. He asked, “Is there not a cause?” and turned his attention back to the task before him. Not every criticism deserves a defence. Some people speak from fear, insecurity or discomfort with the growth they see in you. Their doubts may come from family members, friends or colleagues, but you do not have to accept their words as the truth about your purpose. Protect your energy from endless arguments. Like David, focus on the work ahead and seek wise, encouraging people who can help you grow. Where you cannot leave a discouraging situation, be careful about sharing every plan with people who repeatedly undermine your confidence. If discouragement has made you doubt your worth, remember that your identity is not defined by criticism or past mistakes. Through faith in Jesus Christ, you can find forgiveness, strength and direction to keep moving forward.
