Sheikh Gumi Calls Fight Against Terrorism a Religious Duty but Condemns Civilian Casualties
Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has described combating terrorism as a religious obligation following the killing of Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, ISIS’s second-in-command, by US and Nigerian forces. In a social media post, Gumi praised the goal of eradicating terrorists while condemning operations carried out with “hands stained with the blood of innocent men, women, and children.” The joint mission was announced by former US President Donald Trump, who said it was the result of extensive intelligence gathering and strategic cooperation. He noted the operation will significantly weaken ISIS’s reach in Africa. Trump also commended the Nigerian military for its role in the mission. Al-Minuki was accused of coordinating attacks against American and African communities.
