How the 1901–1902 Aro Expedition Reshaped Arochukwu and Ezza

The 1901–1902 Aro Expedition marked a turning point in British colonial rule in Igboland. British forces under officers including Colonel H. A. Montanaro and Captain R. L. Bower entered Arochukwu, targeting the Aro Confederacy and the influence of the Ibini Ukpabi oracle. The campaign brought military occupation, arrests of Aro leaders, the destruction of sacred and political institutions, and the introduction of warrant chiefs who answered to the colonial authorities. British control was later extended across neighbouring communities, with disarmament, taxation and forced labour for road construction. Ezza was not part of Arochukwu, but nearby Igbo communities felt the wider effects of the colonial advance. The British presented the campaign as an effort to end slavery and open trade, yet it also secured access to palm produce and established control over the interior. The fall of Arochukwu weakened a major centre of Igbo spiritual, commercial and political influence. Its impact remained in the memories and oral histories of many communities.
