After Eight Years of Marriage, I Learnt to Respect My Wife’s Boundaries With Her Family
I learnt what love looks like from my parents. My father stood by my mother during difficult moments and supported her without treating it like a favour. Their marriage shaped the kind of husband I hoped to become. My wife made that easier. We started our marriage in a small apartment, unsure of what the future would hold, but I never doubted my decision to marry her. Even when friends pushed me to search for faults in her, I chose to love her as a whole person rather than manufacture problems. The hardest lessons came through her relationship with her parents. I often tried to mediate and keep the peace, but I eventually realised that I was overlooking the reasons she needed distance. Bringing her mother for omugwo against her wishes taught me that good intentions can still hurt a partner. After eight years of marriage, I have learnt that love needs patience, trust and respect for boundaries. I can support my wife without taking over decisions that concern her family and her healing.
