Anambra Parents Seek Probe as Private School Demands Compulsory Extracurricular Fees
Some parents in Anambra State are urging the government to investigate a private school accused of charging extra levies for end-of-session activities. The school has made its Class Awards, Nursery and Primary Pageantry, and “Fun Fair” compulsory and is demanding immediate payment. It also warned that pupils who don’t pay will be barred from exams next week, even after all regular school fees were settled. This directive appears to contradict an existing Anambra State governor’s order discouraging extra end-of-session charges. Parents say the school also insists on non-reusable textbooks and workbooks, further increasing costs. A parent speaking anonymously has called on the Ministry of Education to step in, enforce compliance with state policies, and protect families from exploitative practices at the school on Umuodu Road by Goodwil Junction, Okpuno in Awka South.
