Why Powerful Nigerians Often Escape Prosecution

Corruption allegations and abuse-of-office claims are common in Nigeria, yet many high-profile cases never reach a clear conclusion. While some suspects are arrested and prosecuted, others appear to remain beyond the reach of the law. The reasons are often complex. Investigators may lack admissible evidence, witnesses may be unwilling to testify, and financial crimes involving shell companies or offshore transactions can be difficult to trace. Long court processes, appeals, jurisdictional disputes and procedural delays can also weaken cases over time. Political influence remains a major public concern. Shifting alliances, selective enforcement claims and constitutional immunity for serving presidents, vice presidents, governors and deputy governors have deepened the perception that justice is tougher on ordinary Nigerians than on the powerful. Not every allegation proves guilt, and due process must be protected.
