Returning to the University of Ibadan Senior Staff Club: Friendship, Memories and Tennis
A rainy afternoon visit to the University of Ibadan Senior Staff Club brought back years of friendship, pepper soup, tennis and familiar banter. Although I had been away for a long time, old friends welcomed me warmly and quickly made me feel at home. The visit also reunited me with members of the Ibadan academic and creative community, including scholars and film practitioners. I was especially struck by the celebration of Professor Mark Nwagwu, who returned to school at 89 to earn another PhD in Culture and Media Studies. Founded in 1958, the club remains a meeting point for relaxation, networking, intellectual discussion and university life. Its bars, pool, tennis court and social events continue to foster camaraderie among members, though the ageing facility could still benefit from improved maintenance. As I left, the refurbished floodlit tennis court stirred memories of my own playing days. For a moment, I considered joining the game again, but I decided that reunion would have to wait for another day.
