Pastor Bolaji’s “Men Dey” Response: Can a Pastor Shake the Dust Off His Congregation?
A viral church video has sparked debate after Pastor Bolaji Idowu addressed expectations around financial support in relationships. Some members responded with “men dey”, a popular expression suggesting that if one man cannot provide something, another man can. The pastor reportedly responded by removing his shoes and dusting them, while referring to the biblical instruction to shake the dust off one’s feet when a message is rejected. This teaching appears in Matthew 10:14, Mark 6:11 and Luke 9:5. Acts 18:6 also describes Paul shaking out his clothes in protest after facing opposition. I do not support the congregation’s response, as it appeared disrespectful and unnecessary. However, I believe a pastor’s use of such a symbolic action toward members raises serious questions. Was it a joke, an expression of frustration, or a spiritual declaration against people under his care? Should Christian leaders respond this way when members reject or challenge their message? Would prayer, correction and patience have been a better response?
