When Asking for Help Starts Feeling Like Entitlement
There is nothing wrong with asking for help. Life is difficult, and many Nigerians genuinely need support. But kindness should not be mistaken for an obligation. Some people now expect financial help even when they know you are managing your own bills and responsibilities. When you cannot give, they may label you stingy, proud or wicked. Social media has made this worse. A birthday post, new purchase or personal achievement can quickly bring requests for money, airtime, transport or loans that may never be repaid. Some friendships now seem to exist only when there is a financial need. We should show compassion to people in real need, especially in this difficult economy. At the same time, everyone deserves boundaries. Being able to help does not mean you are required to sacrifice your own stability or peace of mind.
