Anglican Primate Directs Awka Archbishop Ibezim to Take Six-Month Leave
The Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Rev. Henry Ndukuba, has directed the Archbishop of the Province of the Niger and Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Alexander Ibezim, to proceed on a six-month administrative leave. The directive, dated October 13, 2026, followed allegations concerning Awka Diocese and is intended to allow a fair investigation, peace and reconciliation. The Primate said the leave is not a disciplinary sanction. The Bishop of Aguata Diocese, Rt. Rev. Samuel Ezeofor, has been appointed to supervise Awka Diocese and coordinate the Province of the Niger during the period. Ibezim has been directed to hand over immediately and will not officiate at church activities while on leave.
