Einstein’s 1948 Letters on Zionism, Irgun and Menachem Begin
This post reproduces three 1948 documents linked to Albert Einstein’s views on events surrounding the creation of Israel. In an April letter, Einstein condemned armed Jewish groups in Palestine and warned of a possible catastrophe. In a separate letter to Chaim Weizmann, he congratulated him on leading the new state while expressing concern about British and American positions. The post also includes a New York Times letter signed by Einstein, Hannah Arendt and others. It criticised Menachem Begin’s Herut movement, citing the Deir Yassin killings and alleging fascist methods and political goals.
