NIWA Warns Boat Operators Against Night Trips and Overloading
The National Inland Waterways Authority has warned boat operators against night sailing, overloading, using unseaworthy vessels and allowing passengers to travel without life jackets. At a waterway safety and flood-control campaign in Kaduna, officials said preventable human errors remain a major cause of boat accidents. Operators were urged to check weather and water conditions, obey vessel capacity limits and ensure passengers wear life jackets correctly. NEMA also highlighted safe boarding procedures and flood-survival skills for people who rely on rivers for their livelihoods. NIWA said it had trained more than 60 boat operators and donated life jackets to encourage safer travel on inland waterways.
