Lagos Food Prices Rise as 50kg Maize Bag Hits ₦55,000
Food prices rose across key Lagos markets in October, with a 50kg bag of maize climbing from ₦40,000 to ₦55,000 in one month. A survey covering Mushin, Daleko, Mile 12 and Oyingbo found that 31 of 67 tracked food items increased in price. A large bag of ogbono rose from ₦300,000 to ₦405,000, while a 50kg bag of yellow garri moved from ₦18,000 to ₦23,000. Tomatoes offered some relief, as the price of a large basket fell by 22.22% to ₦35,000. The increase comes despite a stronger naira and higher foreign reserves. The wider briefing also highlights a proposed Abuja rent cap, electric buses expected to reduce Kano transport fares, and INEC's plan to release the final voters' register on 15 December.
