Pope Leo Begins 12-Day South America Tour After Lung Surgery
Pope Leo XIV is starting a 12-day South American tour on Friday, his longest overseas trip since becoming pope. His first stop is Montevideo, Uruguay, followed by Argentina and Peru, where he spent more than 20 years as a missionary and bishop. The 71-year-old pope underwent surgery in October, during which part of his right lung was removed. His doctors have said he is cancer-free and cleared him to travel. The Vatican says his schedule, including public masses and a visit to the Peruvian Andes, remains unchanged. Leo has Peruvian citizenship and speaks Spanish. His predecessor, Pope Francis, was from Argentina but never returned there as pope.
