FIFA and CAF Review NFF Crisis as September 27 Election Remains Suspended
FIFA and the Confederation of African Football are reviewing the leadership crisis at the Nigeria Football Federation after the resignation of NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and other Executive Committee members. In a letter to Deputy General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme, FIFA said no decision had been made on the legal, governance and electoral implications of the upheaval. The football bodies are also considering discussions held with Nigerian officials in Zurich on September 1. The crisis follows criticism of the NFF after Nigeria’s senior men’s and women’s national teams failed to qualify for their respective World Cups. FIFA said the September 27 NFF election will remain suspended while the review continues. FIFA and CAF officials are expected in Abuja to meet NFF officials, Congress members, electoral bodies and the National Sports Commission before deciding on possible next steps.
