Middle Belt Forum Demands State-Level Funding, Rejects Northern Security Trust Fund

The Middle Belt Forum (MBF) has condemned the Northern Nigeria Security Trust Fund and urged governors of Middle Belt states to withdraw from the regional initiative. The group argues that each state should invest directly in local security rather than contribute millions monthly to a regional pool. The MBF highlighted years of violence in the Middle Belt, pointing to thousands killed, communities destroyed and farms abandoned. It accused the Northern Governors’ Forum of failing to condemn attacks on Middle Belt communities and claimed the fund could be misused to promote the interests of core northern elites or even rehabilitate former terrorists. Instead, the MBF proposed that states channel resources into community-based defence, better local intelligence, surveillance technology, emergency response systems and rebuilding schools and hospitals. It also called for a regional security network of Middle Belt states to tackle ongoing attacks. The forum vowed to legally challenge the planned N1 billion monthly deduction and encouraged direct investment in displaced persons’ resettlement and victim compensation.
