Labour Party NEC Dissolves Usman Committee, Endorses Abure Ahead of 2027 Primaries
The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party has disbanded the Esther Nenadi Usman–led Caretaker Committee. It simultaneously reaffirmed its support for the National Working Committee under Barrister Julius Abure. The decision emerged from a virtual NEC meeting on March 17, 2026, with all state chairmen and secretaries present. NEC reviewed the caretaker committee’s actions and found them unlawful and damaging to the party’s interests. Members unanimously agreed to dissolve the committee following calls for a proper NEC session in the Tribune’s March 6 publication. The council has now directed National Chairman Julius Abure to notify the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). This step will pave the way for party primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections, aligning with INEC’s timetable.
