Wayne Rooney has criticised VAR after Manchester City’s 1-0 derby win over Manchester United was decided by a contentious Erling Haaland goal. The goal was initially ruled out for offside before VAR judged Haaland to be onside. However, the referees’ body later admitted that an offside player’s involvement in the build-up should have prompted an on-field review. Rooney said the failure to identify the possible interference was “baffling”, arguing that VAR is taking emotion and momentum away from football.
